Second early potatoes

Choosing the best varieties for organic production has to be one of the first decisions to make. We can help you make that decision by discussing certain issues such as your intended market place, soil type and facilities.

Toluca

Toluca has a single gene totally resistant to foliage blight and stood up to blight throughout the 2007 and 2008 epidemics in 3 separate trials in the UK. This variety has shown that it can produce consistant yields in any season. It also has a good appearance and eating qualities. View Agronomic Data Sheet (PDF)

Cosmos Cosmos

This variety has shown that it can produce a marketable set skin crop long before any other. Cosmos produces many bakers, tending towards low tuber numbers per plant. Improved tuber numbers can be achieved by increasing seed rate or with irrigation at tuberisation. View Agronomic Data Sheet (PDF)

Milva

Milva is a versatile potato producing high numbers of excellent looking tubers. This variety has enormous potential with an ability to produce clear bright skin with more scab resistance than most other varieties. Has duel purpose of general ware and salad uses. View Agronomic Data Sheet (PDF)

Amorosa Amorosa

Amorosa is an early red skin producing beautiful long oval deep red tubers with creamy yellow flesh. Amorosa is good for early lifting and good for washing. View Agronomic Data Sheet (PDF)

Marfona

High quality large tubers with many baking size tubers. Known for its waxy texture, Marfona is popular with consumers. Although Marfona does not have as high resistance to blight as other varieties it can produce a clean skin and if it is grown in an area where blight risk is low, it will produce high yields of clean skinned large waxy tubers early in the season to catch higher prices. Romano

Romano is a useful variety due to its ruggedness and easiness to grow. Good blight resistance. Romano has late dormancy break which leads to very good storage properties and late sales. View Agronomic Data Sheet (PDF)

Nicola

Moderate yields of yellow fleshed long tubers with good cooking qualities and versatile uses from new salad to general prepack. However Nicola is not a very robust variety suffering losses from disease and high out grades. It is increasingly becoming outclassed by better and newer varieties.

Charlotte

Second early producing attractive oval/oval long tubers with a light yellow skin. Used primarily as an early set skin salad potato with medium dry matter, waxy texture and yellow flesh. Reasonable resistance to blight. Charlotte is renowned for its eating qualities. Susceptible to PCN.

Maris Peer

Second early producing a very uniform sample of round oval tubers with white skin. Used primarily as early set skin salad/table potato with medium/low dry matter and firm cooking texture. Good resistance to powdery scab, gangrene, bruising and mechanical damage help to give this variety good appearance. Susceptible to drought, slugs and spraing.
