Consumption of organic food continues to rise and more wholesale markets are opening up all the time. This has got to be good news for organic potato growers. The growing season has seen some dificulties and with bold markets may well lead to shortages later in the season leading to improved prices.

NEW VARIETIES

We have two new varieties available this year to add to our selection. Virgo is a second early producing large white skin and white fleshed tubers. Virgo will produce early set skin crops suitable for washing. Amorosa is an early red skin producing beautiful long oval deep red tubers with creamy yellow flesh. Amorosa is perfect for early lifting and for washing. Trials have shown us two new varieties (Donna & Toluca) with incredible blight resistance. With both also looking good for cooking we will start to multiply these up for comercial production.

NON-ORGANIC SEED DEROGATIONS

The Soil Association has released the following statement:

" Thanks to the great work of organic seed producers and suppiers, there is now widespread availablity of organic seed potatoes. This means that all potato producers should be able to source 100% organic seed.

As a result, we will only consider requests to use non-organic seed in exceptional circumstances and these requests must be received by SA Cert by 31/12/05. Please see www.organicXseeds.co.uk for information on seed availability and order your seed early."
